Do you suffer from aching muscles, even when the muscles are at rest? Chances are you suffer from muscle knots. These muscle knots are caused by long-term built-up tension or overuse. The pain is not only felt in the muscle but can also radiate to other areas. Fortunately, we can repair muscle knots through dry needling.
What are muscle knots?
Muscle knots are not real knots but are hard, sensitive spots in the muscle that spontaneously contract. These muscle knots are called trigger points. Due to prolonged built-up tension, the muscle is shortened and thickened. This causes the muscle to stretch in a different place. The area around the muscle compensates for the pressure, putting everything under tension and causing pain to radiate to other areas.
Causes of muscle knots
The most common cause of muscle knots is overuse. People with heavy jobs are more likely to suffer from these complaints. Yet we see these complaints occurring more and more often in people with sedentary occupations. Too little exercise and incorrect work posture increase the risk of muscle knots. Muscle knots are also caused by stress, anxiety and unhealthy eating habits.
Symptoms of muscle knots
Muscle knots cause pain at the site itself and in the surrounding areas. Even when the muscle is not tightened, you may experience discomfort. The area swells and becomes inflamed. Muscle knots are common in the neck, shoulders and back and often lead to head, tooth and ear pain. These symptoms often cause other complaints as well, such as difficulty sleeping, dizziness and feeling constantly agitated.
Recovery from muscle knots
There are several solutions for repairing muscle knots. Dry needling and deep tissue massage are particularly effective.
Dry needling
Dry needling is a treatment technique in which an acupuncture needle is pricked into the muscle knot. The muscle contracts briefly and then will relax for a long time. Blood flow is restored, removing waste products and bringing in nutrients and oxygen. The muscle recovers, reducing the pain.
