Treating trigger points

Trigger points, also known as muscle knots, can be treated in a variety of ways. Which therapy fits best depends on your preference. Physio Man treats trigger points through Dry Needling or Trigger Point Therapy. In most cases, the symptoms are resolved within 4 to 8 sessions.

What are trigger points?

Trigger points are small cramps in the muscles. They can be recognized by small painful hardenings in the muscle and often occur in the neck, shoulders or back.

Cause of trigger points

A lack of blood flow and oxygen causes tenderness. However, the pain can also radiate to another part of the body. Trigger points can occur in a variety of ways:

  • Physical
  • Performing a movement repeatedly
  • Heavy exertion such as heavy lifting or sports
  • Incorrect posture
  • Accident or a fall
  • Mental
  • Suppressing Emotions
  • Stress

Dry needling

With a fine needle we prick the muscle. This causes the muscle to contract briefly after which the muscle slowly relaxes. This restores the blood circulation and makes it easier to remove waste products. In time the muscle recovers and the pain diminishes.

Trigger point therapy

If you don’t like needles then we recommend trigger point therapy. With trigger point therapy, pressure is applied to the trigger points with a massage which relieves the muscle and allows it to recover.

Health insurance dry needling and trigger point therapy

Dry needling and trigger point therapy are not covered for adults under basic health insurance. However, with a supplementary health insurance policy, the cost of treatment is covered. To be sure, check your current policy to see if you are eligible for reimbursement for dry needling and trigger point therapy.
