Hand therapy

Hand therapy is a specialised form of care within physiotherapy and occupational therapy that focuses on pain, stiffness, tingling and loss of strength in the hand, wrist and forearm. At De Fysio Man, the hand therapist carefully examines the movement of joints, tendons and nerves, your grip strength, coordination and sense of touch. Based on this, you will receive a personalised plan with clear steps: targeted exercise therapy, splinting and load advice, scar and tendon gliding training, ergonomic tips for work and sports, and practical exercise equipment for home use. The goal: a quick and safe return to daily activities, work, and sports.

What is hand therapy?

Hand therapy focuses on pain, stiffness, tingling, and loss of strength in the hand, wrist, and forearm. At De Fysio Man you’ll be guided by a specialised hand therapist with advanced knowledge of tendons, nerves, joints, and scars. Where needed, we collaborate with your GP, hand surgeon, plastic surgeon, or rehabilitation physician so you can recover efficiently and regain confidence in your hand function at home, at work, and in sport.

Assessment

During the first appointment we map out your symptoms and goals. We assess mobility of the hand and wrist, grip and pinch strength, coordination, and sensation. We test tendon gliding and nerve function, and we analyse how your hand is loaded during daily activities, work, and sport. Based on this, we create a personalised treatment plan with clear steps and measurement moments.

Treatment

A hand therapy programme combines targeted exercise therapy with practical guidance. This may include joint mobilisation, tendon- and nerve-gliding exercises, scar mobilisation, and progressive strengthening. If needed, we use taping or a custom splint for rest or guidance. You’ll receive ergonomic advice for keyboard, mouse, tools, and sports equipment, plus a simple home programme that fits your daily routine.

When is hand therapy appropriate?

  • Overuse of hand, wrist, and forearm causing pain or stiffness
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome with tingling and night pain
  • Thumb base osteoarthritis with pain when pinching or twisting
  • De Quervain’s tendinopathy on the thumb side of the wrist
  • Wrist instability or TFCC-related pain
  • Trigger finger with clicking and start-up pain
  • Recovery after fractures or surgery (e.g., distal radius, tendon repair)
  • Scar tissue and swelling after injury with limited mobility

Referral and reimbursement

No referral is required for hand therapy. Sessions are reimbursed as physiotherapy under your supplementary insurance. Splints or aids may fall under different conditions. If you don’t have supplementary cover, please check our pricing page. We’re happy to think along with you about a suitable trajectory at De Fysio Man.
